Obverse description Right-facing diademed and draped effigy of Queen Elizabeth II occupies the central field, rendered in high relief with fine detail to the hair and tiara. The peripheral legend reads 'ELIZABETH II · TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS' arcing around the upper portion of the coin. The date '1980' appears in the lower exergue beneath the portrait. The overall style is consistent with the Arnold Machin effigy used on Commonwealth coinage of the period.

Additional information

Lord Mountbatten was assassinated by an IRA bomb on his fishing boat off the coast of Mullaghmore, County Sligo, in August 1979. The Turks and Caicos Islands issued this crown the following year as part of a wave of Commonwealth memorial coinage that followed his death — a genre the islands leaned into heavily during the late 1970s and early 1980s, producing collector-targeted silver issues with little expectation of circulation.
