The Turks and Caicos Islands issued a wave of commemorative crowns through the 1990s tied to the fiftieth anniversary of World War II events — this piece marking the D-Day landings of June 1944, with Eisenhower honored in his role as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force. His famous pre-invasion message to the troops, drafted the night of June 5th, was accompanied by a handwritten note accepting full personal responsibility in case the operation failed. That note was found crumpled in his wallet days later.
