The 1987 America's Cup saw the first successful defense by a non-American syndicate — Australia II had taken the Cup from the New York Yacht Club in 1983, ending a 132-year American winning streak. The 1987 challenger series in Fremantle drew entries from twelve syndicates across seven nations, ultimately producing a Dennis Conner-led Stars and Stripes campaign that reclaimed the trophy for the United States.
