Nicaragua's córdoba series was overhauled in the early 2010s as the Banco Central shifted away from stainless steel to nickel-plated steel across its higher denominations — a cost-driven move that also affected the 10 córdobas issued the same year. The 5 córdobas piece had previously circulated in a bimetallic format before the series rationalization simplified the lineup.
