The composition shows a bustling tropical harvest scene divided into two registers: at left, labourers load coffee and banana cargo onto sailing vessels at a port, while at right, a lively group of pickers — women in colourful dress and men in broad-brimmed hats — gather fruit among palm trees. Guilloche borders frame the upper and lower edges, with the denomination numeral "5" at each upper corner. |

Issued to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Banco Central de Costa Rica, founded in 1950 after the abolition of the old Banco Nacional's central banking functions. The commemorative overprint on an otherwise standard circulating denomination was a relatively common approach in Latin America during this period — cheap to produce, easy to distribute, and carrying political weight without requiring a full design commission.
De La Rue's involvement with Costa Rican currency goes back decades before this issue, making the London connection unremarkable for the series. What distinguishes P#247 is its dual role: a functioning banknote and a souvenir piece, which means worn circulated examples and uncirculated remainders exist in roughly equal numbers.
