Obverse description Horizontal-format note printed in intaglio on a fine guilloche underprint, centred on an oval portrait vignette of a bearded male figure enclosed within dense lathe-work surrounds, flanked at left and right by large numeral '5' counters. The issuer title 'REPÚBLICA DE COSTA RICA' runs across the upper margin in bold letterpress, with a promise-to-pay clause in Spanish occupying the right-hand text panel. The note bears a manuscript date 'ENERO 1. 1897' at lower centre, serial number and series designations in the upper field, and has been cancelled by multiple punch holes.
