Obverse description The central vignette renders the historic scene of 31 December 1823 in which the Presbyterian priest and physician José Simeón Cañas y Villacorta addresses a formal assembly to proclaim the abolition of slavery in Central America, with freed slaves depicted in the right portion of the composition. The bank title 'EL BANCO CENTRAL DE RESERVA DE EL SALVADOR' runs across the upper margin within a guilloche border, flanked at upper left by the issue date 'SAN SALVADOR, 20 DE JUNIO DE 1967' and at upper center by the denomination 'CINCO COLONES' in letterpress. Three manuscript signatures appear along the lower margin, attributed to the Director, Presidente, and Cajero respectively, with the Thomas De La Rue & Company, Limited imprint below.
