Obverse description	The obverse is dominated by a central intaglio vignette of a male portrait in formal attire, set within an ornate oval frame, flanked on either side by large numeral 5 counters against a yellow-orange guilloche underprint. The bank title BANCO INTERNACIONAL DE COSTA RICA arches across the top in bold letterpress, with the promise text EL BANCO INTERNACIONAL DE COSTA RICA PAGARÁ AL PORTADOR LA CANTIDAD DE arranged in two columns above the serial number. The date 1° Diciembre de 1916, place of issue SAN JOSÉ, série designation B, and the imprint of the American Bank Note Company appear at the lower portion of the note.

Reverse description	The reverse is executed entirely in dark blue-grey intaglio, with a large central guilloche rosette composition incorporating an overlaid numeral 5, flanked symmetrically by two sunburst lathe-work rosettes, all enclosed within an elaborate geometric border. The legend BANCO / INTERNACIONAL DE COSTA RICA is set in a straight panel at the lower centre, with corner numeral 5 counters at each angle. The American Bank Note Company imprint appears at the bottom margin below the border.
