The Banco Comercial de Costa Rica was one of several private banks of issue operating in Costa Rica before the government moved to consolidate monetary authority — a process that accelerated after 1914 and ultimately ended with the nationalization of issuing rights. Notes from this institution are uncommon in any condition, reflecting both limited original print runs and the bank's relatively short commercial lifespan.
Waterlow & Sons handled the plates, as they did for a significant portion of Latin American private bank paper in this period. The P#S141 prefix places it firmly in the Specialized catalogue's private issuer section — not part of any government-guaranteed emission.
