Obverse description Central device depicts the Imperial Korean phoenix (bonghwang) in high relief, shown in left-facing profile with elaborately detailed feathers, outstretched wings, and stylized cloud scrolls beneath. The bird is enclosed within an inner beaded circle. The surrounding field bears the reign-era legend in Chinese characters reading 隆熙三年 (3rd year of Yung Hee) disposed to the upper left and upper right, flanked by the state title 大韓 (Great Korea) to the left and the Hangul denomination 오젼 (five jeon) to the right. The Latin denomination legend 5 CHON appears in the lower exergue, outside the beaded border. The entire design is framed by a reeded rim.
