The Bank of Central China was a Communist Party–controlled institution established in the Shaanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan Border Region during the latter phase of the Second Sino-Japanese War. Notes like this one were issued specifically to fund military and administrative operations in territory held by the Eighth Route Army and associated forces — essentially parallel currency running alongside both Nationalist and Japanese puppet money in contested zones.
Circulation was geographically bounded by military lines, and many issues were demonetized rapidly as the political situation shifted after 1945. Border region notes of this type are frequently found with foxing and fold damage from field use, which is expected rather than exceptional for the series.
