The Elasmotherium sibiricum — sometimes called the Siberian unicorn — survived far longer than early estimates suggested; 2016 genetic dating pushed its extinction to roughly 39,000 years ago, meaning it overlapped with anatomically modern humans in Central Asia. Whether it was hunted out or succumbed to climate-driven vegetation shifts remains unresolved. The Moscow Mint has issued a number of paleofauna pieces in this bimetallic nickel-silver format as part of its ongoing wildlife and natural history program, though the Elasmotherium is an unusual choice — more cryptozoological celebrity than standard natural history subject.
