Obverse description Bare-headed right-facing bust of King Willem II occupying the central field, rendered in high relief with naturalistic detail to the hair and facial features including a short beard. The truncation of the neck is cleanly cut. A circular Latin legend surrounds the effigy, reading WILLEM II KONING DER NED. G.H.V.L., denoting his titles as King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg. The coin is bordered by a fine beaded rim.

Reverse description The denomination and date are displayed in three lines at the centre of the field, reading 5 / CENTS / 1848., enclosed within a symmetrical open laurel wreath tied at the base with a ribbon bow. The wreath branches, rendered in fine relief, sweep upward and outward to either side. A beaded border frames the entire design.
