Obverse description Central field displays the denomination '5 CENTS' in two lines above the date '1894', all within a beaded or floral border interior to the octagonal flan. The design is spare and typographic in character, consistent with a reverse trial piece intended to evaluate the proposed denomination and date layout for the Newfoundland 5 cents coinage. The legends are rendered in raised Roman capital letters against a flat field, with no effigy present on this face.
Obverse script Latin
