Mauritius operated under a notably fragmented small-change system through much of the nineteenth century, with Indian, British, and locally struck pieces circulating simultaneously. The bronze 5-cent series was introduced partly to displace the unofficial tokens and foreign coppers that had filled the gap left by inadequate official supply. Production was handled entirely by the Royal Mint in London across the two-decade span of this type.
KM#9 encompasses several date-specific mintage variations; the 1877 issue is the first year of the type and tends to be the most elusive in problem-free condition.
