New Brunswick's silver 5-cent piece was struck at the Royal Mint in London, a deliberate choice by the colonial government that reflected both distrust of nascent North American minting capacity and the practical reality that no Canadian mint yet existed — the Ottawa branch wouldn't open until 1908. The 1862 and 1864 issues together form a short series interrupted by Confederation negotiations that would ultimately render the province's independent coinage obsolete within years of striking.
New Brunswick entered Confederation in 1867, after which Dominion of Canada coinage supplanted all provincial issues.
