Reverse description A stylized ancient Cypriot bull's head rendered in the manner of a Bronze Age rhyton or ceremonial vessel dominates the central field, its sweeping curved horns forming a heart-shaped arc across the upper portion of the coin. The design is derived from an ancient Cypriot archaeological artefact. Two decorative foliate or wing-like ornamental elements flank the lower field on either side. The denomination numeral 5 is incuse within a raised circular border at the base of the design.

Additional information

Cyprus joined the European Monetary System's exchange rate mechanism in 1992, but the groundwork for monetary standardization was laid through a series of coinage reforms in the mid-1980s — this issue among them. The bordered value number distinguishes KM#55.2 from its predecessor, a die modification introduced to improve legibility on worn circulation strikes, a practical response to complaints about readability in everyday commerce.
