Trial strikes produced for the Central Bank of Sri Lanka in this period were part of the broader recoinage program following the country's 1972 republican transition, when Ceylon officially became Sri Lanka and new national imagery was required across the entire circulating series. The 5 cent denomination in aluminium was being evaluated against weight and die specifications before production contracts were finalized.
KM#Pn1 designation confirms this as the first catalogued pattern for the issue. Survivors are institutional pieces — almost certainly never outside mint or central bank hands before reaching collectors.
