Reverse description A standing blue crane (Anthropoides paradiseus), the national bird of South Africa, is depicted in right profile, rendered in fine naturalistic detail amid reeds and ground cover in the lower field. The large denomination numeral 5 occupies the left portion of the field, with the cent symbol 'c' immediately to its right. The engraver's initials GJR appear in small lettering at the lower left of the field. The overall composition is bold and uncluttered, with the bird and numeral as the sole design elements against a plain field.
