Reverse description The reverse depicts a blue crane (Anthropoides paradiseus), the national bird of South Africa, standing in right profile upon a rocky outcrop rendered in fine detail. To the left of the bird, the denomination '5c' is prominently inscribed in large numerals and lettering occupying the left portion of the field. The engraver's initials 'GJR' appear discreetly in the lower left field near the exergue. The design is bold and naturalistic, characteristic of the post-decimal South African definitive series.
