Between 2005 and 2007, the Vatican mint produced trial strikings in preparation for a potential euro coinage series, testing dies and planchet specifications before official authorization. These essais were never intended for circulation and exist in extremely limited numbers, produced strictly for technical evaluation and archival purposes within the Vatican's coin program.
The copper composition here diverges from the standard copper-clad steel used in production euro cents — a deliberate choice for trial work, allowing metallurgical comparison against the eventual specification.
