In 1966, Australia was preparing to launch its decimal currency system on February 14, 1966 — and the Royal Mint in London, not yet displaced by the new Royal Australian Mint in Canberra, was involved in early trial strikings. Pattern pieces from this transitional period were produced to test dies, alloys, and planchet specifications before full production commenced. The KM# P1 designation confirms this is a pre-release trial rather than a circulating issue.
