| Obverse description | A detailed rendering of an African elephant walking left occupies the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The elephant is depicted with naturalistic detail, standing upon grassy ground with vegetation visible beneath. A five-pointed star appears in the lower field below the beaded circle. The peripheral legend 'REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA' arcs around the upper portion of the coin between the beaded circle and the milled rim. |

The Organization of African Unity held its sixteenth summit in Monrovia in July 1979, and Liberia issued this coin to mark the occasion. It was a moment of some political weight for President William Tolbert, who hosted the gathering less than a year before his government was overthrown in the April 1980 coup led by Master Sergeant Samuel Doe — a violent end to over a century of Americo-Liberian political dominance.
