Kiribati achieved independence from Britain on July 12, 1979, making this among the first coins issued under the new national authority — the same year the Gilbert Islands formally ceased to exist as a colonial designation. The transition required establishing an entirely new monetary identity almost from scratch, with the Royal Australian Mint handling production.
