The Bahamas gained full independence from Britain in July 1973, and this issue entered circulation as part of the first fully sovereign coinage series — designed by a committee that deliberately avoided British Royal Mint input after independence. The series ran largely unchanged for over three decades, an unusual degree of design continuity for a small island nation navigating significant economic shifts, including the collapse of its agriculture-based economy and the rise of offshore banking and tourism as dominant revenue streams.
