| Descrizione del dritto | Left-facing draped bust of Thomas Jefferson, 3rd President of the United States (1801–1809), rendered in high relief after the design of Felix Schlag. The legend LIBERTY appears to the right of the effigy, while the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed to the left. The date appears at the lower right of the field, and on issues from 1942–1945, a large mint mark is prominently placed above the dome on the reverse rather than on the obverse. The initials FS, denoting the engraver Felix Schlag, appear on select issues below the truncation of the bust. |

The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is inscribed above the central device, and a large mint mark letter (P, D, or S) appears above the dome of Monticello, a distinctive feature introduced for wartime issues to facilitate identification of the silver alloy composition. |
