The Westward Journey Nickel series was authorized by Congress in 2004 to coincide with the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, which had departed from Camp Dubois, Illinois in May 1804. Two distinct reverse designs appeared that year; the keelboat issue depicts the 55-foot wooden vessel that carried the Corps of Discovery up the Missouri River through the first season of travel. It was the last year Jefferson's familiar Monticello reverse — unchanged since 1938 — was temporarily retired.
Felix Schlag's obverse portrait of Jefferson was also replaced that same year with a new rendering by Joe Fitzgerald, making 2004 the only year both faces of the coin changed simultaneously.
