Canada's five-cent piece has depicted the beaver since 1937, the design originally commissioned from Emmanuel Hahn as part of a sweeping coinage reform under the new reign of George VI. By 2023, the coin was essentially a relic in daily commerce — the penny had been eliminated in 2013, and periodic calls to retire the nickel on cost and practicality grounds had grown louder, with the Royal Canadian Mint's own research showing most Canadians hoard or discard them rather than spend them.
