| Mô tả mặt sau | Central to the reverse is a highly detailed, close-up effigy of the short-beaked echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus), a native Australian monotreme, depicted facing the viewer with prominent spines radiating across the upper field and forelegs with characteristic claws splayed to either side. The large numeral '5' dominates the lower centre of the field, serving as the denomination indicator. The designer's initials SD appear at the base of the design. The composition fills the coin's field with naturalistic vigour, characteristic of Stuart Devlin's original 1966 design. |

Queen Elizabeth II died on 8 September 2022, and the Royal Australian Mint moved quickly to issue a memorial coinage the following year. Australia had used five distinct official portrait series during her reign; this piece carries a sixth, posthumous portrait — an unusual circumstance in modern Commonwealth coinage, where memorial obverses are rarely struck in circulating denominations rather than commemorative issues alone.
