The 1911 Canadian coinage series became immediately controversial because the obverse legend omitted "Dei Gratia" — by the grace of God — an omission noticed almost at once by clergy and the press, who dubbed the issue the "Godless" coinage. The outcry was swift enough that the Royal Canadian Mint revised the master dies before the following year's production, making 1911 the only year this truncated legend appeared on circulating Canadian silver.
