| Opis rewersu | The central circular hole is flanked by two elegantly curved elephant tusks, their sweeping forms arcing around the perforation and converging at the lower field where additional tusk tips extend downward in a decorative arrangement. The legend 'EAST AFRICA' arcs across the upper periphery, while the date '1920' is inscribed along the lower periphery, separated from the central design by a plain inner ring. Small lozenge-shaped ornaments appear at either side of the legend as decorative stops. The entire design is enclosed within a milled border. |

The East Africa Currency Board was established by the British Crown in 1919 specifically to consolidate monetary administration across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanganyika — territories whose patchwork of competing colonial currencies had created persistent trade friction. The 1920 issue was among the first produced under the new Board's authority, with striking contracted to the Royal Mint.
Tanganyika's inclusion was itself a consequence of WWI: the territory had been German East Africa until the 1919 Paris settlement transferred it to British mandate.
