Belize gained full independence from Britain in 1981, but this coin predates that — issued when the territory was still British Honduras in transition, operating under the newly adopted "Belize" name following the 1973 renaming. The 1974 silver issues were struck specifically for collectors rather than circulation, produced alongside base-metal circulation strikes as part of a proof and specimen set program aimed at the international numismatic market.
The Fork-tailed Flycatcher is not native to Belize in any permanent sense — it is a migratory visitor from South America, an unusual choice for a national coinage series.
