South Africa's shift to English-legend coinage in 1965 was a direct consequence of the country's republican referendum four years earlier and the subsequent need to issue parallel Afrikaans and English coin series — a bilingual duplication that effectively doubled certain mintage runs and created a collecting niche around matching date pairs.
