Obverse description Right-facing bust of Jan van Riebeeck, the Dutch colonial administrator and founder of the Cape Colony, depicted with flowing shoulder-length hair and a lace cravat in the style of 17th-century portraiture. The effigy occupies the central field, rendered in high relief with fine detail. The legend SOUTH AFRICA arcs along the upper periphery, with the date appearing along the lower right. The engraver's initials T.S. appear discreetly in the lower left field.

Reverse description A full-length figure of a Blue Crane (Anthropoides paradiseus), the national bird of South Africa, standing on a rocky outcrop and facing left with its long neck elegantly extended upward. The bird is rendered in fine naturalistic detail, with graceful plumage indicated in the relief. The bold denomination numeral 5 and the letter C appear to the right of the bird in the field. The engraver's initials T.S. are present in the lower right field.
