Ceylon was in the process of renegotiating its coinage contracts in the late 1960s before the country's formal transition to the Republic of Sri Lanka in 1972. Trial strikes from this period were produced to test proposed alloy and die combinations under consideration for the new decimal series — they were never released to the public and exist almost exclusively in institutional or specialist collections.
