Trinidad and Tobago gained independence from Britain in 1962, but the first decimal coinage series — replacing the Eastern Caribbean currency — wasn't introduced until 1964. The 1972 issue falls within the early years of the Central Bank, established in 1964 specifically to manage the new national currency. That institution's creation was itself politically contentious, with debate over whether a small twin-island economy could sustain independent monetary policy without the backing of the sterling area.
