Obverse description The obverse features a reduced effigy of Queen Elizabeth II in her 4th portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley, facing right and wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara, with the legend ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2016 surrounding. In tribute to the 50th Anniversary of Australian decimal currency, the obverse also incorporates a reproduction of the pre-decimal 1953–1964 One Penny coin design depicting a kangaroo, evoking the historical transition to decimal coinage. The inscription FIFTY YEARS AUSTRALIA appears as part of the commemorative legend in the field.

Reverse description The reverse presents a front-facing depiction of the short-beaked echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus), its distinctive spines radiating prominently across the upper field and its fore and hind claws rendered in fine naturalistic detail. The denomination numeral 5 appears centrally within the design, partially overlaid on the animal's body, with the Royal Australian Mint privy mark incorporated at its base. The designer's initials SD (Stuart Devlin) are incused at the lower rim. The overall composition, originally designed by Stuart Devlin for the introduction of Australian decimal coinage in 1966, fills the flan with bold sculptural relief.
