1973 marked the year the Bahamas achieved independence from Britain on July 10th, making this issue part of the first sovereign coinage series released by the new nation. The Franklin Mint struck the coins under contract — an arrangement common among newly independent Caribbean states that lacked domestic minting infrastructure. Unusually, Elizabeth II was retained as head of state, so the transition to independence produced no change in the obverse authority depicted.
