5 Cents - Edward VII

Canada's small silver five-cent piece under Edward VII was struck at both London and Ottawa, with the Ottawa Mint opening in 1908 — making pieces from 1908 onward the first coins produced domestically in Canadian history. Prior to that, all Canadian coinage was contracted to the Royal Mint in London. The 1908 Ottawa issues carry an "H" mintmark only on certain denominations, and the five-cent pieces of the transition years reward close die attribution.

The 1903-H issues, struck at the Heaton Mint in Birmingham, are distinguishable from London pieces by mintmark and are considerably scarcer in circulated grades.
