5 Cents - Edward VII

Newfoundland's five-cent silver piece occupied an awkward political position throughout the Edward VII years — the dominion stubbornly maintained its own coinage despite mounting pressure to simply adopt Canadian currency outright. That resistance held until 1949. All Edward VII five-cent pieces for Newfoundland were struck at the Royal Mint in London, not in Canada, a logistical arrangement that persisted because Ottawa had no interest in extending mint services to a territory that refused confederation.

The 1904 issue is notably scarcer than surrounding dates, with a mintage of just 40,000 pieces against the 200,000 struck in 1903.
