The Danish West Indies issued this coin under pressure to rationalize a chaotic dual-currency system in which both Danish rigsdaler and U.S. dollars circulated simultaneously on Saint Croix, Saint Thomas, and Saint John. The 1878 coinage reform introduced a new unit — the franc, subdivided into 100 bits — deliberately pegged to the Latin Monetary Union standard to ease trade friction with French Caribbean neighbors. This five-cent piece occupies an awkward transitional moment: the franc system never gained public traction, and the islands reverted to a dollar-based structure within decades.
