Canada's five-cent coin has carried the beaver since 1937, a species chosen partly at the urging of the Canadian Numismatic Association and partly as a deliberate nod to the fur trade economy that financed early colonial settlement. The accession of Charles III in September 2022 triggered a mandatory effigy update across all circulating denominations — the first such change since Elizabeth II's portrait was last updated in 2003. Obverse dies for Canadian circulation coinage are produced under Royal Canadian Mint authority using the official Jody Clark effigy of Charles, the same portrait adopted across Commonwealth realms.
