Canadian Tire coupons — officially "Canadian Tire Money" though they carry no legal tender status — were first introduced in 1958 as a customer loyalty mechanism, distributed as change on cash purchases. The Canadian Bank Note Company printed them to a deliberately high security standard, using the same firm responsible for federal currency, which gave the coupons a credibility that likely contributed to their unusual secondary life as an informal local currency in parts of rural Canada.
By 1985 the program was well established enough that acceptance at third-party businesses — gas stations, small retailers, even some restaurants — was commonplace in Ontario. The 5-cent denomination is the lowest in the series.
