Canadian Tire's paper coupons — universally called "Canadian Tire money" despite having no legal tender status whatsoever — date to 1958, when the company introduced them as a loyalty scheme to compete with trading stamps. The 75th anniversary marked in this 1996 issue refers to the corporation's founding in 1922, not the coupon program itself. BA International, the successor identity to the British American Bank Note Company, printed genuine currency for the Bank of Canada alongside this kind of commercial scrip — an unusual overlap of mandates for a security printer.
The coupon program was discontinued in paper form in 2012, the same year BA International ceased operations.
