Canadian merchant scrip from Quebec's Saguenay region, issued by a local petroleum retailer. This type of small-denomination trade coupon — redeemable against fuel or merchandise at the issuing business — circulated informally as a loyalty or change-making device, a practice that persisted in rural Quebec well into the late twentieth century among independent retailers trying to retain customer transactions in cash-poor communities.
Improthèque Inc. was a Quebec commercial printer, not a security printing house. No anti-counterfeiting measures would have been warranted at five cents.
