The "Power of Africa" series from the South African Mint was released in 2001 as a set of proof collector issues, each denomination paired with a different member of the so-called Big Five. The 5 cent denomination in sterling silver was never intended for circulation — it exists purely as a numismatic product aimed at the international collector market during a period when the Mint was aggressively expanding its commemorative output following the post-apartheid restructuring of South African state institutions in the 1990s.
