Kenya's small-denomination coinage from this period was issued under the presidency of Daniel arap Moi, who took power in 1978 following Jomo Kenyatta's death. The 5 cent piece had so little purchasing power by the late 1980s that it was effectively ignored in everyday transactions well before the series ended, a pattern common across sub-Saharan Africa as inflation eroded the lowest denominations into irrelevance.
