| Obverse description | The obverse displays the Kenyan national coat of arms at centre, featuring a traditional Maasai shield supported by two rampant lions, with an axe and spear crossed behind the shield. Kenya's small-denomination coinage from this period was issued under the presidency of Daniel arap Moi, who took power in 1978 following Jomo Kenyatta's death. The 5 cent piece had so little purchasing power by the late 1980s that it was effectively ignored in everyday transactions well before the series ended, a pattern common across sub-Saharan Africa as inflation eroded the lowest denominations into irrelevance.
