Malta gained independence from Britain in 1964 but retained sterling-based coinage until 1972, when the Central Bank introduced a fully decimalized system tied to the new Maltese lira. The 5 cents was part of that inaugural decimal series, designed with imagery drawn from Malta's prehistoric and maritime heritage rather than from the British colonial vocabulary it replaced.
The series ran through 1981 without significant modification, a notably long unchanged run for a newly independent state still calibrating its monetary identity.
