附加信息

Guyana's first national coinage appeared in 1967, the year after independence from Britain, replacing the Eastern Caribbean Currency Authority issues that had circulated under colonial administration. The Bank of Guyana was established specifically to manage this transition, and the 1967 dated pieces represent the country's inaugural autonomous monetary issue. The nickel-brass alloy chosen was a common post-colonial compromise — cheaper than cupronickel, durable enough for tropical circulation.

The series ran largely unchanged for 25 years, a span that bracketed Guyana's turbulent Forbes Burnham era and the economic collapse of the 1980s, when rampant inflation made low-denomination coins functionally worthless in daily transactions.
